Mobile phones activated before December 16 will not be shut down: Ministry

The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology has urged everyone to be careful against spreading rumors that mobile phones will not be deactivated before December 16.

A meeting was held on December 1 by the NBR, the Ministry of Commerce, the Department of Posts and Telecommunications and the BTRC to reduce the duty rate on legally imported mobile phones.

Later, on Wednesday (December 3), the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology gave this information in a press release.

The press release stated that arrangements are being made to legalize the IMEI list of stock phones illegally imported into the market before December 16 with valid IMEI numbers by submitting them to the BTRC. Discussions are underway with the NBR in this regard. However, this facility will not be provided in the case of clone phones and refurbished phones.

As per the decision taken in the meeting, mobile phones activated before December 16 will not be deactivated in any way. It has been urged to be aware of rumors in this regard. It has been said that NEIR is being implemented from December 16, so refrain from buying handsets without valid IMEI numbers. Illegally imported, smuggled, and cloned phones will be banned in Bangladesh. Dumping of old phones from abroad will be stopped in the country. The rampant smuggling business that has been started by changing the casing and bringing these electronic wastes into the country will be stopped.
