UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, paid a courtesy call on Principal Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus. During this meeting, he praised the Principal Advisor’s leadership and said that his role in prioritizing the Rohingya issue in the international arena is very important.Andrews reminded that an international conference on Rohingya is going to be held at the UN Headquarters on September 30 at the initiative of the Principal Advisor. Bangladesh for providing shelter and assistance to the Rohingya and the world is grateful to Dr. Yunus for keeping the hope of a long-term solution alive, he said.Expressing hope that the UN conference will pave the way for a clear solution to the protracted crisis, the Principal Advisor said that the recent reduction in financial assistance for the Rohingya in Bangladesh is having a major impact on essential services, including health and education. He requested Andrews to continue his efforts to ensure adequate funding.Andrews praised Bangladesh’s engagement with various parties in resolving the crisis. However, he expressed disappointment that the UN Secretary-General's initiative to stabilize Rakhine and create an enabling environment for the return of refugees has not been successful due to malicious propaganda. Nevertheless, Andrews expressed hope that continued efforts by the parties concerned can bring about a speedy and lasting solution and called for Bangladesh to continue its leadership role in this regard.Andrews is visiting Bangladesh to participate in a stakeholder dialogue on the Rohingya issue to be held in Cox's Bazar on August 25. The dialogue will be inaugurated by the Principal Advisor.
