National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Md. Nahid Islam said that peaceful change through elections is a big challenge. If national unity and stability of Bangladesh can be ensured, then it is possible only through elections. He said these things at the ‘Fourth Bangladesh Economic Conference 2025’ program at a hotel in the capital on Saturday (November 29) afternoon.Nahid Islam said that the upcoming elections will give the people and the whole world a signal whether the country will actually be stable or not. Whether the transition is taking place peacefully through a fair election in the country or not. The biggest challenge for us now will be to make the transition very peaceful. If we cannot do it peacefully, instability will remain. We have to move forward with a long-term plan. We cannot change the damage that has been done in the economic sector in the last 16 years overnight. We should not even try to do that. I don't think it is possible to create any kind of employment or such a change in a year, a year and a half or 18 months. We will need a long-term plan for this. But we have to give a signal to the society that we are moving in a positive way for that. I have to give the most importance to employment, if we can build a skill-based education system, then the employment of the youth is possible. He said, what was the reason behind the mass uprising of 24, when the people, especially the youth, took to the streets? Did they have any economic motivation, aspiration or goal? If we can find the answers to these questions and solve those problems, then we can complete our economic reform work in Bangladesh. To discuss the economic aspirations of the mass uprising, we first have to talk about the economic system of the fascist period. Although we have already discussed these issues. In the last one and a half years, we have to think about the economic situation of our fascist period, which we can call an economy of plunder. We also need to discuss the economy of smuggling our country's money abroad and robbing banks.Nahid Islam further said, when we started the quota reform movement, it was clear to us that although this movement was demanding quota reform, there was a background behind it. We very consciously named our movement the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Because if we want to connect this movement with the larger people of the society, we have to take this movement to a moral place. If we only do it as a group interest movement, we will not be able to advance it very far. As a result, the job movement may have been our main demand, but the name of our banner was the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. You should remember that at that time, there was a movement demanding workers' wages, a lot of increase in commodity prices, employment demands, etc. As a result, we started the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement banner or this slogan to connect these larger demands of the society, which later turned into political demands. The economic arrangement during the fascist era that created inequality in socieIf you go further back to the anti-discrimination student movement, there have been three important student movements in the last decade. The first is the private university anti-VAT movement, the second is the 2018 quota reform movement and the safe road movement. These three movements are also related to the context of this mass uprising. The NCP convener claims that economic aspirations are involved in all three movements.
