Mahin Sarker has withdrawn his candidacy for the post of General Secretary (GS) in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election. Instead, he has extended his support to Abu Baker Mojumder, the GS candidate from the Democratic Students’ Union (BAGCHAS).The announcement came on Friday (September 5) around 11:30 am during a press conference held at Madhur Canteen on the Dhaka University campus.Explaining his decision, Mahin Sarker said, “At this moment, unity among the forces of the mass uprising is essential. I believe that if one of the leading figures of the movement can be elected to DUCSU, they will feel more accountable than anyone else. Abu Baker Mojumder is a frontline leader of the uprising. If he wins, I will consider it as my own victory. Therefore, I am declaring my full support for him.”Mahin Sarker had earlier been contesting the election as an independent candidate for the GS post. However, just hours after his announcement, he was expelled from the Nationalist Students’ Council (NCP) on charges of “serious breach of discipline.”It is worth noting that during the July mass uprising, Mahin Sarker served as the coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The Democratic Students’ Union (BAGCHAS), formed by former leaders of that movement, is now contesting the DUCSU election under the banner of the “Anti-Discrimination Students’ Panel.”
