Osman Gani , Upazila Correspondent, Chandina || The Chandina Upazila Gate area, one of the most vital and busiest points on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, has currently become a source of distress for the general public. With nearly 30,000 vehicles passing through daily, this section of the highway is already narrow. Compounding the issue is the lack of driver awareness and the tendency to drive on the wrong side of the road, making minor and major accidents a daily occurrence.The root cause of this extreme suffering and frequent accidents is the severe traffic congestion within Chandina Bazar. Serving as a junction for four upazilas, this bus stand is a crucial station for commuters. Despite thousands of students and professionals using this route every day, the main road of the market has become unfit for public movement. Illegal shops on the road and haphazard parking of battery-run rickshaws and CNGs have made the situation unbearable. In particular, the stagnant dirty water from the fish market and the dilapidated state of the road have made it impossible for even pedestrians to walk, let alone rickshaws to ply.Due to the lack of a suitable environment inside the market, rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are forced to travel dangerously in the wrong direction through the highway’s Upazila Gate. This results in long traffic jams on the highway and the frequent loss of lives. Experts and conscious citizens believe that if illegal occupants are evicted, specific areas are designated for motorcycle parking, and the fish market is relocated, people will be able to use the main road easily. This would stop the trend of driving on the wrong side of the highway and significantly reduce the risk of accidents.To alleviate the public’s suffering, Chandina Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Ashraful Haque has assured strict action. He stated that in the interest of the public, all illegal shops on the market road will be evicted and the fish market will be moved to its designated location within the next week. He expressed hope that the general public will begin to see the visible benefits of these changes within a week.
