Police have arrested a youth named Md. Nazmul Haque Bappi (21) on charges of forcibly raping an 11-year-old fourth-grade student at a Hafizia orphanage in Chandina, Cumilla. In addition, five more suspects were arrested during separate drives in various areas of the upazila under the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Arms Act. The accused were forwarded to the learned court under proper police escort yesterday, Sunday (June 21).According to police and case statement (Ejahar) sources, the victim child is a fourth-grade student in the Nazera department of Borkoroi Haji Abdul Bari Hafizia Orphanage in Chandina. On Saturday (June 20) around 12:10 PM, the accused, Md. Nazmul Haque Bappi, asked the student to sweep a room. After sweeping the room, when the child went to the ablution area (Ojukhana) to take a bath at around 12:40 PM, the accused arrived there. At one point, he stripped the victim by force and sodomized him.Following the incident, the victim's father, Md. Durjoy Ahmad Hridoy (34), filed a case statement as the plaintiff at Chandina Police Station. However, even before receiving the written complaint, the Chandina police received information about the incident, conducted an immediate raid, and managed to arrest the accused rapist, Nazmul Haque Bappi. The arrested Bappi is the son of Md. Abdur Rahim Khan from Mankandia village under Netrokona Sadar upazila.Meanwhile, Chandina police stated that five more accused were arrested during special drives conducted in different parts of the upazila to maintain law and order. Among them, four were arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act. They are Ruhul Amin Mithu (34) of Srimantapur village, Md. Salahuddin Bhuiyan (36) of Surikhola village, Md. Shahin alias Kuddus (25) of Bhuiyapara village, and Rubel Hossain (20) of Sonakanda village.Furthermore, during the same operation, police also showed Ruhul Amin Mithu, son of Haji A. Malek of Srimantapur village, arrested as a fugitive accused with a GR warrant in a case under the Arms Act. Police sources confirmed that a total of six arrested accused have been sent to court following standard legal procedures.
