Brazil secured top spot in their FIFA World Cup 2026™ group with a commanding 3-0 victory over Scotland at Miami Stadium, advancing to the Round of 32 with a perfect record.Star forward Vinicius Junior inspired the five-time world champions with two first-half goals as Brazil claimed their second consecutive win and clean sheet of the tournament. The victory sets up a Round of 32 clash against the runners-up of Group F in Houston on June 29.Brazil took the lead just six minutes into the match after a costly mistake by Scotland defender Scott McKenna. Under pressure from Rayan, McKenna’s attempted clearance was blocked, allowing Vinicius Junior to collect the loose ball, round goalkeeper Angus Gunn, and score for the third consecutive World Cup match. The Brazilian winger thought he had doubled his tally shortly afterward, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for a foul on Jack Hendry.Scotland briefly settled into the contest but conceded again in first-half stoppage time when Bruno Guimaraes delivered a dangerous cross that evaded Gunn, allowing Vinicius Junior to head home his second goal of the evening.Despite several impressive saves from Gunn to deny Rayan and Vinicius Junior, Brazil added a third goal in the second half. Bruno Guimaraes once again played provider, setting up Matheus Cunha, who fired a low shot into the near post.Scotland created a few opportunities of their own, but goalkeeper Alisson Becker preserved Brazil’s clean sheet with key saves from Lewis Ferguson and Scott McTominay. The introduction of Neymar Jr. late in the match added another highlight for Brazilian fans, with the veteran making an appearance in his fourth consecutive FIFA World Cup.
Vinicius Makes HistoryVinicius Junior's outstanding performance saw him become only the fifth Brazilian player to score in all three group-stage matches of a World Cup. He joins an elite list featuring Jairzinho (1970), Romario (1994), Ronaldo (2002), and Rivaldo (2002). Notably, Brazil went on to win the tournament on each of those previous occasions.
ReactionsScotland coach Steve Clarke admitted Brazil deserved the victory. >“Let's be honest, the best team won. We passed the ball well early on but made a mistake, and at this level you get punished. It became a long night for us.”Midfielder John McGinn echoed those sentiments, saying: “We lost poor goals at poor times against a quality team. The lads are gutted, but we gave everything.”Brazil captain Marquinhos praised his team's focus but warned against complacency. > “We've achieved our first objective, but we have to keep going. Now the real competition begins. The small details will make all the difference.”
