Field after field is a feast of green leaves, and hidden behind those leaves are hundreds of golden and dark green sweet pumpkins. Such an eye-catching scene is now being seen in the crop fields of Mehar village in Chandina upazila of Comilla. This season, a marginal farmer from Mehar village, Swadesh, has set a unique example in the area by cultivating sweet pumpkins on just 6 percent of his land. Capitalizing on modern methods and hard work at a nominal cost, he is now basking in the smile of a bumper yield. This incredible success of his has also given new hope to other local farmers.Farmer Swadesh said that although he did not have any major formal training, he started this cultivation by simply utilizing experience and proper care. To cultivate sweet pumpkins on this 6 percent piece of land, he spent only two to three thousand taka on seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation. The big advantage of pumpkin cultivation is that it does not require extra labor or expensive chemical fertilizers like other crops. With a little organic fertilizer at the right time and regular care, the plants grow quickly. In his homeland, this is no exception. Despite the small capital and little labor, his field has achieved unexpected success. Starting from the base of the tree to the branches, there is now only a fair of sweet pumpkins.Currently, the demand for this nutritious vegetable is high in the market. The size and quality of the sweet pumpkins produced in this field in Mehar village are quite excellent, so there is a huge demand for it among wholesalers and retailers. In the current market, sweet pumpkins are being sold at a price of 40 to 50 taka per piece, depending on the size.Expressing his feelings, Swadesh said in a joyful voice, "Initially, I did not think that I would get such a good yield at such a low cost. The yield I got today by spending only two to three thousand taka, and now my profit is more than double. The market price is also getting quite good. Seeing such a good profit at such a low cost, I feel a different satisfaction in my mind." He further said that after removing this short-term crop, he is planning to cultivate another profitable crop on this same land.Local agricultural experts say that sweet pumpkin is a very profitable and nutritious vegetable. There are very few more profitable crops on small land and at low cost. If everyone like Swadesh comes forward to cultivate vegetables like sweet pumpkin in a modern way even on their fallow or small amount of land, it will not only change the picture of the rural economy, but also meet the nutritional needs of the country. This silent agricultural revolution of Swadesh in Mehar village has proven that with goodwill and the right initiative at the right time, it is possible to do great things even from a small 6 percent of land. This field of native crops is now an inspiration for other farmers in Mehar village.
