Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has made it clear that the government does not support unauthorized, unprofessional, or unethical activities carried out under the name of mobile journalism.He said that a proposal has been made to amend the Press Council Act of 1974 to bring it up to date and strengthen the Press Council. This amendment includes proposals to set minimum educational qualifications for journalists, establish a journalist registration system similar to the Bar Council, and introduce financial penalties for publishing false, harassing, or ethically inappropriate news.The Information Minister made these remarks on Wednesday, July 8, in the Jatiya Sangsad, in response to a question from Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organizer of the Southern Region of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Member of Parliament.Zahir Uddin Swapan said the government remains committed to ensuring media freedom alongside professionalism, accountability, and responsible journalism.Responding to a question from Mohammad Zahirul Islam, MP for Chattogram-16, the Information Minister said the Ninth Newspaper Wage Board award has been implemented by BSS from the date its gazette was published. He said the Ninth Newspaper Wage Board has not been fully implemented due to a difference of opinion between journalists and newspaper owners over income tax payments, adding that a case regarding this matter is currently pending before the High Court.
