Residents travelling to Barishal or other parts of Bangladesh often have to rely on ferries, launches, trawlers and speedboats, facing long waiting times, adverse weather and frequent disruptions.Now, a new initiative is raising hopes among the people of the island district.Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced plans to bring Bhola under the national highway network through a new road route connecting Rahmatpur, Hizla, Mehendiganj and Bhola. The initiative is being seen as a significant step toward improving communication and accelerating economic development across the southern region.The project is also linked to a commitment made by Tarique Rahman before the 13th national parliamentary election. During an election rally in Barishal on February 4 this year, he spoke about improving communication between Bhola and Barishal.On August 22, the government formally announced plans to construct the new highway and instructed the relevant authorities to move forward with the project. Decades of IsolationFor generations, Bhola's residents have faced difficulties caused by the district's dependence on river transportation. During bad weather, waterway services are often suspended, leaving people stranded and disrupting emergency travel.The situation can become particularly serious for critically ill patients who need to be transported quickly to Barishal or Dhaka for advanced medical treatment.Local residents say the proposed road connection could significantly reduce travel difficulties and provide faster access to hospitals, educational institutions and major business centres.Bhola is surrounded by the Meghna, Tetulia, Kalabador, Ilisha and Buragauranga rivers, as well as the Bay of Bengal. Despite its natural resources and agricultural potential, the district has remained disconnected from the country's main road network. Economic OpportunitiesLocal business leaders believe improved road communication could bring major changes to Bhola's economy.The district is rich in natural gas and is widely known for hilsa fish, rice, betel nuts and other agricultural products. However, transportation difficulties have often limited the ability of farmers and businesses to move their products quickly and efficiently to markets across the country.Md. Jamal Uddin Khan, a director of the Bhola Chamber of Commerce, said better road communication would make it easier to transport hilsa, watermelons, capsicum and other agricultural products to Dhaka and other major markets.He believes the new communication network could help farmers and producers receive better prices while also creating opportunities for industrial development and investment. Demand for Bhola-Barishal Bridge ContinuesWhile welcoming the highway initiative, many residents are also renewing their long-standing demand for a direct bridge between Bhola and Barishal.Members of local organisations say the highway project and the proposed Bhola-Barishal bridge should be viewed as complementary development initiatives rather than alternatives to each other.They believe a direct bridge connection would further strengthen communication between the island district and the rest of southern Bangladesh.Bhola Press Club President Advocate Nazrul Haque Anu said the proposed highway would be an important step toward ending the district's isolation. However, he also stressed the need to consider a bridge connecting Bhola with Barishal as part of a long-term transportation strategy. Major Infrastructure ProjectAccording to the Roads and Highways Department in Bhola, approximately 21.5 kilometres of new road are expected to be constructed along the Rahmatpur, Hizla, Mehendiganj and Bhola route.Executive Engineer Md. Maidul Islam said consultants would be appointed to conduct a feasibility study before the project moves into the implementation stage.Once completed, the new highway is expected to reduce travel time between Bhola and other parts of the country and create new opportunities for trade, industry and investment.Local leaders believe the project could transform the economic landscape of Bhola and the wider southern region.For the people of the island district, the proposed highway represents more than just a new road. It carries the hope of ending decades of isolation and opening a new chapter of communication, economic growth and development.If the project is implemented as planned, Bhola could finally become directly connected to Bangladesh's national highway network, bringing a historic change to the lives of millions of people in the region.
