At least 14 passengers were injured when a 'New Ekta Service' passenger bus lost control while overtaking at a reckless speed in Chandina, Comilla on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. The condition of some of the injured is said to be critical.The accident occurred on Wednesday (September 2) at around 4 pm in the Dhaka-bound lane opposite the Elliotganj Highway Police Station in the Khadghar area of the upazila.According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the passenger bus named 'New Ekta Service' (Comilla G-11-0273), which left from Shasngacha in Comilla at noon, was heading towards Gauripur at a reckless speed. When it reached the Khadghar area of the highway, the driver tried to overtake another Shyamoli passenger bus at a fast pace. At that time, the driver lost control and the bus fell into a ditch on the side of the road and hit an electric pole. This spread panic among the passengers inside the bus and at least 14 people were seriously injured.After the accident, local residents heard a loud noise and quickly rushed to the scene to rescue the injured and took them to Chandina Upazila Health Complex, Gouripur Upazila Health Complex and the local Elliotganj General and Apollo Hospitals for treatment.Saiful Islam, a passenger of the bus, said, "The driver suddenly lost control while trying to overtake the bus at a reckless speed. In the blink of an eye, the vehicle fell into a ditch and hit an electric pole hard."Confirming the accident, Elliotganj Highway Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Faruk Islam said that a team of Highway Police reached the spot immediately after receiving the news of the incident and started a rescue operation. The bus helper has been arrested after the incident. He also said that work is underway to rescue the bus from the ditch. Necessary legal action is being taken in this regard.
