Md. Osman Gani , Upazila Correspondent, Chandina || Driven by poverty to keep the wheels of his family turning from a tender age, Sagar had worked pulling rickshaws and vans. In hopes of changing his fortune, he borrowed money and crossed oceans to distant Russia. There, he had secured a well-paying job at a bakery. However, falling prey to a broker's alluring temptations, he abandoned that job to enlist in the Russian military, ultimately losing his life in the Russia-Ukraine war.Sagar was the youngest son of Md. Kabir Hossain from the Chaikot area of the Upazila municipality. Among three sisters and two brothers, he was the youngest. Born into an extremely poor family, his education did not go beyond primary school. Prompted by the hunger of poverty, he earned his livelihood from adolescence by driving rickshaws and vans. Because he drove a van for a local rod-and-cement shop, he developed a close relationship with one of the store's managers. That manager later returned home from abroad and sent Sagar to Russia in mid-2025 at a cost of only six lakh taka.Upon arriving in Russia, Sagar took a job at a bakery and began earning a salary of around seventy thousand taka per month. But while staying there, he met a Bangladeshi broker. Enticed by the broker's false promises of securing him a job in the Russian military along with a lump sum of thirty lakh taka, Sagar quit his bakery job this May. Falling into the broker's trap, he directly joined the Russia-Ukraine war, and all communication with his family ceased soon after.Last Saturday night (October 17), a friend of Sagar from Russia sent a message to his sister's mobile phone stating that Sagar was no longer alive. Since receiving this tragic news, Sagar's home has been heavy with grief. His mother repeatedly faints in sorrow. His ailing father, Kabir Hossain, has also become completely speechless with grief after losing his son.Sagar's uncle, Abdul Awal, said that when Sagar mentioned leaving his bakery job to join the military, he had stopped him, reasoning how someone with meager education could possibly serve in a foreign military. Yet, brokers deceived and tempted him, pushing him onto the battlefield. Before going to war, Sagar had sent three lakh taka to his uncle's account, but no further contact could be made since.Regarding the matter, Chandina Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Ashraful Haque stated that they were not aware of the incident and would look into it to take necessary steps.
