Irregularities and corruption have been alleged in the distribution of 31 tons of relief rice allocated under the GR project of the Disaster Management Department in Hatia, Noakhali. It is learned that a large portion of this rice allocated for orphan students has been embezzled by allocating it in the name of fake organizations.

It is learned that although there are only three registered orphanages in the upazila, most of the rice has been allocated in the name of anonymous organizations. 4 tons of rice have been allocated in the name of Mozaharul Ulum Madrasa, Rashedul Ulum Madrasa and Sirajul Ulum Madrasa in the Baradeil area of Burirchar Union. However, no organizations named Rashedul Ulum and Sirajul Ulum have been found to exist.

Rashedul Islam, the headmaster of Mozaharul Ulum Noorani Madrasa, admitted that he had taken rice allocation in the name of a fake organization to meet the financial deficit for the development of the madrasa. He said, “I sold the rice allocated for the construction of the madrasa building and used it. Instead of collecting donations from students and teachers, I have chosen this path of government grants.”

Hatia Upazila Executive Officer Md. Ibn Zayed Al Hossain said, “We have received a complaint in this regard. If it is proven after investigation, necessary action will be taken against the culprits.”

Such irregularities in the rice allocated for orphans have created anger among the locals. The locals have demanded a speedy investigation and bringing the culprits to justice.
