Chattogram, 11 November Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasib Aziz has instructed police officers to shoot on sight (brushfire) any armed terrorist found in the act. The commissioner delivered the verbal order on Tuesday afternoon via wireless messages to duty officers at all CMP police stations and outposts across the city.Commissioner Hasib Aziz acknowledged the directive, saying, “Yes, I have given my personnel such an instruction. This order will not remain merely words.” He voiced concern about weapons looted from several police stations on 6, 7 and 8 August 2024. “Because of those thefts, many firearms are unaccounted for. We cannot be certain whether the missing weapons have reached terrorists or are being used in criminal activities,” he said.Referring to a recent shooting incident during an election campaign where an automatic pistol was used, the commissioner added that the weapon might have been one of the firearms taken from police armouries. “If we had been able to recover the weapon, we could determine whether it belonged to us,” he said. In that context, he said he issued the order that anyone found attempting to kill with a firearm should be shot dead if necessary. He further stated that the directive is grounded in law, pointing to relevant provisions in the penal code specifically sections 75, 76 and 96 to 106 as the legal basis for the use of force. It is worth noting that a similar wireless directive has been circulated previously: in August this year the CMP commissioner issued orders over the wireless that if anyone suddenly produced a weapon in front of a police patrol or during an operation, officers should fire immediately in self-defence.
