Celebrating a Literary Luminary: Kamrul Hasan Shayok Turns 60

Today marks the 60th birthday of Kamrul Hasan Shayok, a name synonymous with innovation, leadership, and transformation in Bangladesh’s publishing industry. Born on September 6, 1965, in Syedpur, Nilphamari though rooted in Chandpur Shayok has spent his life turning dreams into pages, and pages into bridges connecting Bangladesh to the global literary world.

From the earliest days of his career, Shayok envisioned a future where Bangladeshi publishing would not remain confined within national borders. With unwavering dedication, he embarked on a lifelong mission to elevate the country's publishing sector onto the global stage—a dream he not only pursued but helped realize over the span of more than three decades.

Since 1993, his journey has been a story of firsts and frontiers. As one of the pioneers of technology-based modern book publishing in Bangladesh, Shayok played a central role in integrating international standards into the local industry. Under his leadership, Bangladeshi publishers began making regular appearances at prestigious international events such as the Frankfurt Book Fair, London Book Fair, and the Kolkata International Book Fair.

Shayok’s influence is deeply embedded in both national and international publishing bodies. His instrumental efforts led to Bangladesh achieving full membership in the International Publishers Association (IPA) and solidified its presence in the Asia Pacific Publishers Association (APPA). He went on to serve as the Chairman of the APPA Working Committee and as a former Vice President of the Bangladesh Book Publishers and Sellers Association.

Currently, he is the Managing Director of Panjeree Publications Ltd., Chairman of Barotopa Printers Ltd., and a Director of PBS Ltd., Bangladesh’s pioneering bookstore chain. His leadership also extends to Dursoon Publications, Akkharpatra Prokashoni, and Words and Pages. As the former Executive Director of the Academic and Creative Publishers Association of Bangladesh, Shayok left an indelible mark through policy advocacy and industry reform.

Beyond publishing the works of others, Kamrul Hasan Shayok is a prolific author himself. His writings include both children’s literature and technical manuals on publishing: Jamie O Jadur Shim Gach (2003), Motshokumari O Ek Ashchorjo Nogori (2020), Mudranshoilee Nandanik Prokashonar Nirdeshika (2018), Pandulipi Prostutkorn Sompadona O Proofreading (2019), Pustok Utpadon Bebosthapona (2021).

Through these works, he has inspired countless young readers while also serving as an educational guide for the next generation of publishers.

Shayok’s contributions span far beyond business and books. He is a lifetime member of several prestigious institutions including the Bangla Academy, the Bangladesh Liberation War Museum, and the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SAARC CCI). His affiliations with the United Nations Association of Bangladesh (UNAB), Printer Industry Association of Bangladesh, FBCCI, and the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry reflect a life lived in service to both industry and country.

As Kamrul Hasan Shayok turns 60, the publishing industry in Bangladesh salutes not only a pioneer but a torchbearer someone who has turned the act of publishing into a platform for national identity, cultural exchange, and global recognition.
