Onions, chicken, beef and vegetables have increased by 20-50 taka per kg.
Before the start of the month of Ramadan, the prices of daily necessities have increased in the city's raw market in Lakshmipur. In a span of a week, the prices of various vegetables including onions, chicken, beef have increased by 20 to 50 taka per kg. This has put pressure on low and middle-income buyers.
On Thursday (February 19), visiting the city's big market, Hazir Hat, Karuna Nagar, Lawrence, Alexander, Zamindar Hat, and various raw markets, it was seen that traders have increased prices on the pretext of increasing demand for products centered around Ramadan.
Onion price hiked up to Tk 30 per kg
Onions that were being sold for Tk 50-60 a week ago are now being sold for Tk 70-80 per kg. Vendors say that the impact of the price hike in the wholesale market has also affected the retail market.
Beef price hiked by Tk 50
Currently, beef is being sold for Tk 850 per kg. A few days ago, beef with bones was being sold for Tk 800 per kg. Meat trader Idris said, "The demand has increased a little with Ramadan ahead. However, this price will not be permanent, it will come down again after a few days."
Chicken market also booming
The price of broiler chicken has increased by Tk 20-30 per kg and is now being sold at Tk 200. Golden breed chicken is being sold at Tk 310 and layer (red) chicken at Tk 320 per kg. Chicken seller Momin said that the demand for chicken increases every year with the arrival of Ramadan. The price also increases accordingly.
Vegetable markets are also on fire
Cucumbers are being sold for 80 taka per kg, brinjals for 80 taka, green chillies for 160-200 taka per kg. Lemon slices are being sold for 60-80 taka. Buyers complain that prices are being increased irrationally around Ramadan.
Buyers' anger
Buyer Nazim Uddin said, "A few days ago, brinjals were 50 taka, now they are 80 taka. Traders take advantage as soon as Ramadan starts. But the administration is not very active in monitoring the market."
Demand for administration's surveillance
Consumers complain that additional surveillance is needed in the market ahead of Ramadan. They claim that traders are increasing prices at will due to the lack of regular supervision.
Even though the demand for daily necessities increases during the month of Ramadan, conscious circles are emphasizing on ensuring effective monitoring and supply to keep the market stable.
