The government has issued an ordinance repealing the rules for allocating party symbols in local government elections. As a result, from now on, there will be no more party symbols in local government elections. President Md. Shahabuddin signed the ordinance.

The ordinance that was issued on Monday amending the Union Parishad, Upazila Parishad, Municipality and City Corporation Act will no longer have any legal scope for party nomination in local government elections in the future.

On July 1, the Ministry of Local Government prepared four separate draft ordinances in this regard and sent them to the Cabinet Division. After the approval of the Advisory Council on July 24, it was published in the form of a gazette with the consent of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.

In 2015, during the Awami League government, it was decided to vote on party symbols in local government elections. Since then, various parties and election experts have been demanding for a long time that the use of party symbols in local government elections should be stopped.

The Interim Government's Electoral Reform Commission and the Local Government Reform Commission have recommended eliminating party symbols.  Concerned individuals believe that removing this provision will encourage many eligible individuals who are not directly affiliated with political parties to participate in the elections.
