The main entrance to the Chandina Upazila Parishad and Chandina Bazar, located adjacent to the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Cumilla, has become a major source of distress for the general public. A massive wholesale fish market has occupied the primary road leading south from the Chandina highway station. Every day, from dawn to dusk, fish worth millions of taka are traded here, drawing traders from various districts and neighboring upazilas who bring fish in numerous trucks.
Local residents complain that fish-laden trucks discharge filthy, melting ice water directly onto the road, keeping it perpetually muddy and slippery. This not only ruins the clothing and footwear of pedestrians but also poses a serious health risk due to the unbearable stench. The presence of the market on the main road causes severe traffic congestion, making it nearly impossible for school and college students, daily commuters, and emergency patients to move. During peak morning and afternoon hours, the road becomes almost entirely dysfunctional.
Aggrieved locals stated that they have repeatedly approached the Chandina Municipality and the Upazila Parishad to demand the relocation of the market, yet no effective action has been taken. Consequently, public frustration is mounting. Residents believe that since there is ample space in the nearby Old Cattle Market (Puratan Gorubazar) area, shifting the fish market there or to another suitable municipal location would permanently resolve the gridlock and public suffering. Locals have warned that if the authorities do not settle the matter soon, they will be forced to launch a protest to reclaim their right to a clean and accessible road.
