Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has inaugurated the Family Card program in line with his election pledge.
The program was officially launched on Tuesday (March 10) around 11:00 AM at the T&T Ground in Banani, near the Korail slum in the capital.
Under the first phase of this initiative, 37,567 female-headed families across the country will receive a monthly allowance.
According to government information, the Family Card program is being implemented as a pilot project in 15 wards under 13 city corporations or unions in 13 districts of the country. In the initial stage, data from 67,854 female-headed families were collected. After verification, the information of 47,777 families was found to be accurate.
Due to issues such as double dipping (receiving multiple allowances by the same person), government employment, pensions, and other reasons, a total of 37,567 families have been selected to receive the allowance.
Under the program, each female-headed family will receive a modern Family Card. This contactless chip-enabled card will include QR code and NFC technology. A single card will cover up to five members of a family. If a family has more than five members, the authorities will consider issuing additional cards if necessary.
Each family will receive a monthly allowance of 2,500 taka. According to the beneficiary woman’s preference, the allowance will be deposited either into a mobile wallet or a bank account. Information about these accounts was also collected during the data collection process.
