The United States has temporarily suspended the sanctions imposed on Russia’s oil sales. On Thursday, local time, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) disclosed this information in a letter. According to the letter, licenses have been issued allowing ships carrying Russian crude oil and petroleum products to operate until April 11.
The United States had imposed sanctions on Russia’s oil sales after the Russian military operation in Ukraine began in February 2022. In the context of the ongoing Iran war, the U.S. administration has decided to lift these sanctions.
Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, recently said that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz must be kept closed in order to put pressure on enemies. In a speech on state television, he called for national unity and stated that Iran will not back down from its position amid the ongoing conflict.
It is worth noting that Mojtaba Khamenei was selected as the new leader after the former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in a joint U.S.–Israeli attack.
