Injured individuals in the Chandina attack.

In Chandina, Cumilla, allegations of a brutal attack, vandalism, and the cutting down of trees have surfaced against an elder brother and his associates in an attempt to forcibly occupy land following a dispute. The heinous incident took place last Tuesday afternoon in Srimantapur village of the upazila.

Following a long-standing dispute over family land, a group led by the elder brother, Fazlu Mia, and his son, Mohsin Mia, launched a sudden attack on the house of the younger brother, Majlu Mia. When Majlu Mia and his family members tried to resist, they were indiscriminately assaulted with local weapons. During the attack, Majlu Mia’s son, Ali Hossain, sustained a serious head injury and is currently undergoing treatment at Cumilla Medical College Hospital. Furthermore, Majlu Mia’s wife, Johura Begum, is being treated at the Chandina Upazila Health Complex with severe injuries. Other family members also sustained various degrees of injury.

The tension did not end there; the following morning, the accused Mohsin once again entered the house with a group of people, vandalized furniture, and cut down approximately 30 fruit-bearing and timber trees in the courtyard. At one point, they attempted to break the lock of the main gate to enter the residence. Left with no choice, the victimized family called the emergency service number 999 for police assistance. Upon receiving the news, Chandina Thana Police quickly reached the spot, causing the attackers to flee. Although the police intervention prevented a major disaster, the area remains tense and gripped by panic. Majlu Mia’s family is currently suffering from extreme insecurity and has demanded a fair investigation and justice from the administration regarding this despicable attack.
