The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka has explained the confusion that arose on social media regarding an Eid gift involving Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
On Tuesday night, in a post on the embassy’s Facebook page, it stated that the information circulating on social media about a charitable event by the Chinese ambassador was not consistent with the facts.
The embassy said that China remains committed to its friendly policy toward Bangladesh and reaffirmed its support for good governance under the elected government. China also stated that it will continue working together with the Government of Bangladesh for the welfare of the people of both countries.
On Tuesday, the Chinese Embassy distributed food packages as Eid-ul-Fitr gifts for residents of Dhaka at the field of Mirpur 10 Adarsha School. The event was attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka, Yao Wen, and the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Shafiqur Rahman. After the program, the verified Facebook page of Jamaat-e-Islami mentioned that the gifts were distributed through a joint initiative of China and Jamaat.
However, the distribution of food packages as Eid gifts was not a joint arrangement; it was solely organized by the Chinese Embassy. This is where the confusion began.
Later that night, the Chinese Embassy made a Facebook post about the Eid gift distribution. The post did not mention the word “joint” anywhere; instead, it emphasized that the event was organized solely by China.
Meanwhile, various criticisms regarding Jamaat’s involvement with China began circulating on social media. In response, the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka issued a post explaining its position.
After the clarification from the Chinese Embassy, Jamaat-e-Islami corrected its earlier Facebook post.
