Landslide Hits Sicily in Italy, State of Emergency Declared
A severe landslide has struck the Italian island of Sicily, triggering widespread concern among local residents. The incident occurred in the city of Niscemi, following days of intense rainfall caused by Cyclone Harry. Continuous heavy rain softened the soil on nearby hillsides, eventually leading to the massive landslide.Although drone footage of the area may appear visually striking, the reality on the ground has been devastating for the local population. Soil has collapsed across nearly four kilometers, leaving many people without shelter. Families have been forced to abandon their homes and are now living in uncertainty and fear. One local resident recalled a similar landslide that occurred nearly 30 years ago, highlighting the long-lasting impact of such disasters.According to local authorities, the danger has not yet passed. Due to ongoing risks, approximately 1,500 people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure.Head of Italy’s Civil Protection Department, Fabio Ciciliano, confirmed that the landslide is still active. He stated that he personally recorded the incident on his mobile phone, describing the situation as extremely serious and alarming.In response to the evolving crisis, the Italian government under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has declared a state of emergency in Sicily, as well as in the regions of Sardinia and Calabria.
