Will not allow Israel to occupy West Bank: Trump

US President Donald Trump has said that Israel will not be allowed to occupy the West Bank, which is occupied by the Palestinians. He also said that he is hopeful that an agreement can be reached on Gaza soon. The British media outlet BBC reported this information in a report on Friday (September 26).The media outlet says that Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly on Friday. Before his speech, Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday, "I will not allow Israel to occupy the West Bank... It will not happen."Trump will meet with Netanyahu next Monday. He also said on Thursday that an agreement on Gaza is "very close."Global pressure is gradually increasing on Israel to stop the Gaza war and end the occupation of the West Bank. Western countries are one after another officially recognizing the independent Palestinian state. But the ultra-nationalists in Netanyahu's right-wing coalition see the West Bank annexation as a permanent solution. The UK and Germany have warned Israel of the consequences of annexing the West Bank. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in New York on Monday that the move was "morally, legally and politically unacceptable."In such a situation, Trump told reporters on Thursday that he had spoken to Netanyahu and other Middle East leaders. In his words, "We are very close to an agreement on Gaza, maybe there will be peace."Meanwhile, in a video address to the UN, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his interest in working with world leaders to implement the French peace plan. The US has not allowed Abbas, 89, to travel to New York.Abbas originally addressed the General Assembly via video link on Thursday. He could not attend the session in New York in person because the US did not grant him a visa.He thanked the countries that recognized Palestine as a state. Canada, Australia, the UK and Portugal were the first to recognise the state on Sunday. France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra and Denmark followed suit. However, the US is still opposed to recognising Palestine. According to Washington, this would be a reward for Hamas. However, Abbas has made it clear that “Hamas will have no role in the regime.”He has claimed that after the Israeli withdrawal, the Palestinian state will take full responsibility for the Gaza Strip and it will be annexed to the West Bank.On Tuesday, Trump met with leaders of Arab and Muslim countries at the United Nations. He warned that Israel would face serious consequences if they annexed the West Bank. “The US president understands very well the risks and dangers of annexing the West Bank,” Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan told reporters.
