Tarique Rahman to BBC Bangla

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has been out of the media spotlight for a long time. This time, after almost two decades, he gave an interview to a media outlet. Tarique Rahman spoke to BBC Bangla.

On Tuesday (September 7), BBC Bangla released the second part of his interview. During this time, he discussed reforms, the interim government and Bangladesh-India relations. He also commented that if the BNP comes to power, it will not be accepted if the people of the country are hurt. Bangladesh Travel

In response to a question about his relationship with the interim government, Tarique Rahman said, the matter is political, it is not a personal matter. We want the interim government to be successful. That is, there are two issues here. One is reforms, the other is the expected fair elections. The main goal of this government is to organize a fair and impartial election along with some reforms that cannot be done without doing these. We expect them to properly fulfill their main responsibility. As a political party, this is what we want from them. We expect them to do it properly. It seems that the warmth or coldness of the relationship will depend on how well or badly you are able to do this.

The presenter asked, you said in a speech that there was doubt in the public mind about the impartiality of the interim government. I asked the chief advisor, he said that he wanted to know whether you (Tareq Rahman) had doubts. In this regard, he said, when I said this, they had not said anything properly during the election or about this. That is why not only in my mind, if we see various media personalities at that time, who discuss political issues at different times, almost everyone had doubts. When we saw the head of the interim government announce a roadmap and later on he took a firm stand on his decision several times, since then the doubts have started to disappear from the minds of many people.

Regarding what else was discussed with the chief advisor in the London meeting, he said, the chief advisor is a very wise man. Many polite things were said. He asked me what steps you would take if the people give you a chance. We talked about this. Some of my thoughts, if I get a chance, the people of the country will give me a chance.

When asked about Tarique Rahman's assessment of the 11-member government or the army-backed government, he said, "In one sentence, it was a government with ill intentions. We built whatever political foundation we had in the country through deep conflict, through mistakes and errors. They wanted to destroy everything. They wanted to depoliticize. They wanted to lead the country towards darkness."

In response to the question, what will be the BNP's main policy in terms of diplomacy if BNP comes to power? Tarique Rahman said, "BNP's main policy is one, Bangladesh first. My people, country, sovereignty first. Everything else is based on this. There is criticism of the relationship with India during the previous government." Regarding BNP's policy on relations with India, he said, "I said this in the previous question, Bangladesh first. I will first look at the interests of my countrymen and then everything else."

Regarding how Bangladesh's relationship with India should be, he said, "Of course I want my share of water. I don't want to see another felon hanging in the balance. We will not accept this. We will not accept any attack on the people of the country," he added.
