Counter-attacks on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border

Counter-attacks on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border

Heavy gunfire has been reported on the border between the two countries after Afghan Taliban forces attacked several Pakistani military posts.

On Saturday (October 12), Reuters reported, citing security officials from both countries, that clashes have broken out between forces on the border after Pakistani airstrikes in Kabul this week.

Pakistani security officials said they were responding “with full force” to unprovoked firing from Afghanistan. The officials said there had been gunfire at more than six locations along the border. Reuters quoted local officials in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province as saying that Taliban forces had claimed to have captured three Pakistani border posts. Pakistani security officials said their troops had destroyed several Afghan posts. Video footage shared by Pakistani security officials showed bullets and gunfire being fired into Afghanistan, illuminating the night sky. The Taliban government on Thursday vowed revenge after Pakistan launched airstrikes on the Afghan capital Kabul and eastern Paktika province. Islamabad neither admitted nor denied the airstrikes. However, it called on Kabul to stop harboring the "anti-Pakistan terrorist organization" Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Pakistani media outlet Dawn said, "The Pakistani army retaliated after the Afghan Taliban launched unprovoked attacks on Enayetullah Khwarazmi said it was a counter-attack in response to Pakistan's violation of Afghan airspace. He said the attack ended at midnight local time. He also said, "If the adversary violates Afghanistan's airspace again, our armed forces are ready to defend the airspace and will respond strongly."
