In the quiet village of Chaudhury Bari in Shibganj upazila, Bogura, lives a man whose kindness has made him a household name. Dr. M N Noman Chowdhury, widely known as the “Doctor of the Poor”, has dedicated his retirement years to serving the underprivileged.
While most MBBS doctors in Bangladesh charge 700–800 taka per visit, Dr. Chowdhury sees patients for just 50 taka. For countless poor and helpless families, this small fee is nothing short of a blessing.
A retired MBBS doctor and former Civil Surgeon of Joypurhat, Dr. Chowdhury has chosen a path of service instead of comfort after his long career in government service. Every day, he sits at his home chamber, offering medical consultations, mostly related to general medicine.
What drives him is not financial gain but compassion and a deep sense of responsibility toward humanity. With his dedication, many families who cannot afford costly treatment now have access to quality medical advice at an affordable cost.
Locals say his initiative has brought hope and relief to countless people in the area. His story proves that retirement can also be a new beginning—a chance to give back to society.
And so, with love and respect, the people of Shibganj fondly call him—“The Doctor of the Poor.”
