Tribunal sentences Sheikh Hasina to death

Tribunal sentences Sheikh Hasina to death

The tribunal has sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity for the July massacre.

The International Crimes Tribunal judge gave the verdict on Monday (November 17) afternoon.

The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder, announced the verdict in the case.

The other two members of this tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

The verdict announcement is being broadcast live on BTV and Reuters. In addition, it is also being seen on the tribunal's Facebook page. The verdict announcement is also being shown on big screens at ten locations in Dhaka.

The general public and the international community were curious about what punishment Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal could receive as the order-givers. Although there have been death sentences in Bangladesh's history, no woman has been executed. However, considering that, Sheikh Hasina has no chance of any such mercy, said Gazi MH Tamim, the prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal. He said, considering the woman, Sheikh Hasina has no chance of getting mercy from the death penalty. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have taken strict security measures in various parts of the country, including the capital, surrounding the verdict in Sheikh Hasina's case.
