Former dictatorial Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity. After that, the Bangladesh government has officially requested her return to carry out her sentence.
Sheikh Hasina fled to New Delhi, India, on August 5, 2024, in the face of a mass uprising by students. She has been there since then.
The statement that Bangladesh issued after the tribunal's verdict demanding Hasina's return said in strong language that if India continues to shelter Hasina, who is a war criminal, it would be "highly unfriendly and a contempt of justice."
However, despite this, Sanjay Bhardwaj, a professor of South Asian studies at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, told Al Jazeera that India will not return Hasina. According to him, India believes that Hasina is a victim of political vendetta. Therefore, India will not return her to hang her.
Although India considers Hasina a victim of revenge, a UN report has revealed that law enforcement agencies killed about 1,400 people in just a few days on Hasina's direct orders.
The Delhi University professor also said, "In India's eyes, Bangladesh is now being run by anti-India elements. Professor Yunus often criticizes India. Those who ousted Hasina blame India for supporting Hasina."
"If Hasina is handed over, then those who are anti-India will be given legitimacy," the professor said.
India has issued an official statement regarding the death penalty for Hasina and its formal request for her extradition. The country said that it is aware of Hasina's sentence. It also mentioned that India wants good relations with Bangladesh.
But Bangladesh's relations with India are not good. The warm relations that Dhaka had with Delhi during Hasina's time are no longer there. Instead, Bangladesh views India with distrust.
Former Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pinak Ranjan Chakraborty said, “How can New Delhi push Hasina to the brink of death?”
The former ambassador said that as long as Bangladesh does not return Hasina, the two countries will have bad relations. But this cannot go on forever. According to him, India is now waiting for the elections. When an elected government comes, relations may improve. He said, “India has to wait now. Trade and other issues should be maintained. But other issues should not be disturbed.”
Professor Siddhartha Dutta, an expert on South Asia at Jindal Global University in India, said, “India has fallen into a trap with Hasina. But India is not blind to the anti-Hasina situation in Bangladesh.”
He said, India will want the Awami League and the anti-humanity Hasina to come to power again. Because Hasina is the most qualified person for India.
However, India now has to change this calculation and build good relations with other political parties in Bangladesh. India will have to deal with the issue of Hasina's return, Siddhartha said.
