Joy-Putul sentenced to five years in prison in plot corruption case

The court has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Wazed (Putul) to five years in prison in a corruption case.

Dhaka's Special Judge-5 Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun delivered the verdict at 12:30 pm on Thursday (November 27).

Meanwhile, security has been tightened at the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court for the verdict. Additional police personnel and BGB members have been deployed.

Earlier, the court fixed this day for the verdict after presenting arguments on behalf of Mohammad Khurshid Alam, the only accused arrested and in jail in these cases, former RAJUK member (Estate and Land), last Sunday. Arguments were not presented on their behalf as the other accused were absconding. They could not claim their innocence in the self-defense hearing.

ACC Prosecutor Khan Md. Mainul Hasan (Lipon) said, "We expected the maximum sentence for the accused to be life imprisonment."

On the other hand, accused Khurshid Alam's lawyer Shahinur Rahman said, the ACC was not able to prove the charges against my accused.

According to court sources, the ACC filed 6 separate cases in January on charges of corruption in plot allocation. In these cases, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed (Putul), sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana's daughter and British MP Tulip Rizwana Siddique, son Radwan Mujib Siddique and another daughter Azmina Siddique, and many others have been accused.

Apart from the Sheikh family, the other accused are the Secretary of the Ministry of National Housing and Public Works Md. Shahid Ullah Khandaker, Additional Secretary (Administration) Kazi Washi Uddin, Administrative Officer Md. Saiful Islam Sarkar, Senior Assistant Secretary Purabi Golder, former Chairman of RAJUK Md. Anisur Rahman Miah, former member (Estate and Land) Mohammad Khurshid Alam, member (Administration and Finance) Kabir Al Asad, member (Development Control) Tanmoy Das, member (Estate and Land) Md. Nurul Islam, former member (Planning) Mohammad Nasir Uddin, former Sajr (Engineer) Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury (Retd.), Director (Estate and Land-2) Sheikh Shahinul Islam, Deputy Directors Md. Hafizur Rahman, Habibur Rahman, former State Minister Sharif Ahmed and former Private Secretary to the Prime Minister Salahuddin.

On July 31, Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-5 framed charges against the accused in three cases. On the other hand, Judge Md. Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-4 framed charges against the accused in the remaining three cases.

According to the sources of the cases, on January 14, ACC Deputy Director Salahuddin filed a case against Sheikh Hasina and 8 others. After the investigation, on March 10, the investigation officer, ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya, filed a charge sheet in court against 12 people, including four others found in the investigation.

The other accused in the case are former State Minister for Housing and Public Works Sharif Ahmed, former Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of National Housing and Public Works Purabi Golder, former Chairman of RAJUK Md. Anisur Rahman Miah, former member (Development Control) Shafi ul Haque, former member (Estate and Land) Mohammad Khurshid Alam, former member (Planning) Mohammad Nasir Uddin, former Major Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Nayeb Ali Sharif, Saiful Islam Sarkar, Kazi Washi Uddin and Shahid Ullah Khandaker.

Meanwhile, ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya filed a case on January 12 against 16 people, including Saima Wazed Putul and Sheikh Hasina. Investigation officer Afnan Jannat Keya filed a charge sheet on March 10 against a total of 18 people, including two more accused found in the investigation.

Apart from Sheikh Hasina and Putul, the other accused are - Administrative Officer of the Ministry of National Housing and Public Works Md. Saiful Islam Sarkar, Senior Assistant Secretary Purbi Goldar, Additional Secretary Kazi Washi Uddin, Secretary Md. Shahid Ullah Khandaker, PA of former RAJUK chairman Md. Anisur Rahman Miah, former RAJUK members Md. Khurshid Alam, Kabir Al Asad, Tanmoy Das, Md. Nasir Uddin, retired Major (Engineer) Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Md. Nurul Islam, Director Sheikh Shahinul Islam, Deputy Director Md. Hafizur Rahman, Habibur Rahman, Mohammad Salah Uddin and Sharif Ahmed. The last two are the accused who came under investigation.

In addition, ACC Assistant Director SM Rashedul Hasan filed a case against Sajib Wazed Joy and his mother Sheikh Hasina, including 15 others, on January 14, alleging irregularities in the allotment of plots. Rashedul Hasan filed a charge sheet against a total of 17 people, including two others named in the investigation, on March 24.

The other accused are Saiful Islam Sarkar, administrative officer of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Senior Assistant Secretary Purabi Goldar, Additional Secretary (Administration) Kazi Washi Uddin and Secretary Md. Shahid Ullah Khandaker, PAA of former RAJUK chairman Md. Anisur Rahman Miah, former member (Estate and Land) Mohammad Khurshid Alam, member Tanmoy Das, (Development Control), former member Mohammad Nasir Uddin, member (Development) retired Major Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Assistant Director Mazharul Islam, Deputy Director Nayeb Ali Sharif, Director Md. Kamrul Islam, Director Md. Nurul Islam and Mohammad Salah Uddin.

The case alleges that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family abused their power while holding the highest positions in the government. Despite being ineligible, they were allotted plots of 10 kathas each in Sector 27 of the Purbachal Housing Project.
