BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the capital's Evercare Hospital, spoke for the first time in three days. On Saturday morning, she spoke for some time with Shamila Rahman, the wife of her youngest son, the late Arafat Rahman Koko, who was by her side. The matter was confirmed by doctors and sources close to the family.
Doctors said that although Khaleda Zia's condition has improved slightly compared to the last three days, the overall crisis is not over yet. She has been kept on dialysis for four consecutive days as her kidney function has severely decreased. The situation has become complicated as excess fluid has accumulated in her body and her breathing has increased. Doctors said that although she was conscious, she was not talking or responding for the last few days.
In this situation, the medical board has taken a policy decision to take her abroad again for better treatment. The board, which consists of local experts as well as doctors from Johns Hopkins Hospital and London Clinic in the United States, says that the final decision to take Khaleda Zia abroad will be made only after Khaleda Zia's physical ability to handle the stress of air travel is confirmed.
A source close to the family said that doctors who spoke to daughter-in-law Shamila were seen as positive signs. However, they also warned that the situation could change at any time.
80-year-old Khaleda Zia has been suffering from heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis and various kidney complications for a long time. She was rushed to Evercare Hospital when she started having breathing problems last Sunday. BNP leaders said on Friday night that her condition was very critical.
Meanwhile, a large crowd of leaders and activists has formed in front of the hospital following the news of her illness. Many are also holding prayer mahfils with banners, which is disrupting traffic. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has requested through journalists that no one should crowd the hospital to avoid disrupting treatment.
On behalf of the family, Tarique Rahman expressed gratitude for everyone's prayers and love.
