Talking about the elections following the mass uprising, the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, said that this is an opportunity to build a new Bangladesh. He mentioned that this election should be organized beautifully and fairly and made memorable.
The Chief Advisor said this while giving directions on election preparations to Upazila Executive Officers (UNOs) from across the country through a video conference from the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday (December 10).
The Chief Advisor's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar gave this information citing the video conference.
He said that all the District Administrators, Divisional Commissioners and Cabinet Department officials were connected online during the video conference.
The Chief Advisor told the UNOs at this time that history has given us a new opportunity. Other generations will not get this opportunity. If we can utilize this opportunity, then we will be able to build a new Bangladesh; But if we cannot, then the nation will be in turmoil.
The Chief Advisor said, we have seen elections before. Any sane person would say that the elections held in the past were not elections, but fraud.
He said, the upcoming elections are not like other responsibilities; rather, they are a historic responsibility. If we can fulfill this responsibility well, then the next election day will be historic for the people as well.
Addressing the Upazila Nirbahi Officers, the Chief Advisor said, only if you fulfill your responsibilities properly will the government be able to fulfill its responsibilities successfully. Both the upcoming elections and the referendum are very important for the nation. The elections are for the next five years, and the referendum is for a hundred years.
Regarding the referendum, he said, through this, we can change Bangladesh permanently. We can build the foundation of the new Bangladesh that we want to create through this.
Addressing the newly joined UNOs, the Chief Advisor said, your main responsibility is to organize a peaceful and joyful election.
He advised the UNOs to visit all the polling stations in their respective areas and discuss with all the parties concerned, locals and colleagues to prepare for a good election.
Stressing the importance of making voters aware of the referendum, he said, voters should be convinced that they will make up their minds whether to vote yes or no. Make up your minds.
The Chief Advisor compared the officers to midwives and said that if the midwife is good, the baby born will also be good.
He instructed the officers to be creative in dealing with any situation and to take measures to prevent misinformation and rumors.
Emphasizing the need to give priority to women in participating in the elections, he said, it must be ensured that women can come to the polling stations properly.
Stating that the election schedule will be announced soon, Chief Advisor Dr. Yunus told the UNOs to plan and prepare now for when, how and what to do until the elections are over.
Principal Secretary to the Chief Advisor M Siraj Uddin Mia, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid, Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor Mohammad Shafiqul Alam and Public Administration Secretary Md. Ehsanul Haque along with senior officials were present at the event.
