July warrior Surabhi released, welcomed with flowers

After various incidents throughout the day, 'July fighter' Tahrimah Jannat Suravi was finally released from jail. She was released from Gazipur Central Jail at 6:40 pm on Monday (January 5). After her release, her fellow fighters welcomed her with flowers.

Earlier, Tahrimah Jannat Suravi was granted bail within five hours of the two-day remand order in an extortion case. Additional District Sessions Judge-1 Judge Amit Kumar Dey granted bail for four weeks.

Suravi's lawyer and General Secretary of Gazipur Bar Association Mostafizur Rahman Kamal confirmed the matter. He said, we filed a revision in the Sessions Judge's Court against the two-day remand application granted by the court in the afternoon. Later, after the hearing, the court judge canceled the two-day remand order considering age and other factors and granted four-week interim bail to the accused in my custody.

Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, Kaliakair Police Station SI Omar Faruk, applied for a five-day remand in the court. Judge Syed Fazlul Mahadi of Gazipur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-2 granted Assam a two-day remand after the hearing.

Meanwhile, the July fighters protested in the court premises against the remand and arrest, claiming that Suravi is a minor.

Suravi was arrested from her home in Tongi, Gazipur city, in a joint force operation at around 12:30 am on December 24. Suravi, daughter of Selim Mia of Tongi area, is an active activist of the anti-discrimination student movement and is known as a 'July fighter'. She was asleep at the time of her arrest. She was woken up by the police and taken away. Several journalists were present with the police at the time. A video of the police taking Suravi from her sleeping state after the arrest spread through various media and social media, which generated widespread criticism.

After the arrest, the police said that he is an accused in an extortion case filed by journalist Naimur Rahman Durjoy. According to police records, a journalist named Naimur Rahman Durjoy filed a case against Survi at Kaliakoir Police Station on the charge of demanding extortion of Tk 50,000 against her.

The plaintiff Naimur Rahman Durjoy is the son of Sajjad Hossain of Dhaka's Basabo Shahibagh area. He is a resident of Kishoreganj. He has identified himself as a journalist of Bangladesh Pratidin in the statement.

On the other hand, several audio recordings of the plaintiff in the case have been circulating on social media for the past few days. In them, it can be heard that the plaintiff has offered the arrested July fighter Survi an immoral job. By sharing that audio, many July fighters have claimed that she was framed with a false case because Survi rejected the offer.

When Survi was produced in court from jail on Monday, the July fighters gathered at the Judge Court premises since morning. They continued to chant slogans demanding Suravi's unconditional release and cancellation of the remand.

The protesters alleged that innocent Tahrimah Jannat Suravi was deliberately framed in a false extortion case. She was arrested in a late-night raid at her home and sent to jail without revealing her age. In the same manner, the police today harassed her and granted her a two-day remand.
