The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to relieve board director M Nazmul Islam of all his responsibilities following demands raised by cricketers. The decision was taken during an emergency online meeting held on Thursday (January 15), according to multiple sources within the board. An official announcement is expected shortly.
As per the decision, Nazmul Islam has been removed from his position as head of the BCB’s Finance Committee and will be kept away from all other board-related activities. At present, the finance committee leadership was his only active responsibility within the board.
However, under the BCB constitution, the board does not have the authority to remove a director from his position unless certain conditions are met. These include death, mental incapacity, disciplinary punishment, financial insolvency, absence from three consecutive board meetings, or voluntary resignation. None of these conditions apply in Nazmul Islam’s case. Therefore, unless he steps down voluntarily, he will continue to remain a board director.
The situation has also highlighted a structural gap within the BCB. While the constitution includes a code of conduct for cricketers, there is no such code for board directors. In contrast, most cricket boards around the world have established codes of conduct for their administrators. As a result, even if a director acts outside accepted norms, taking direct disciplinary action remains difficult.
Nazmul Islam became a BCB director for the first time through his involvement with the Talent Hunt Cricket Academy. In light of the recent developments, the board has decided to distance him from all operational activities.
