Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair said that 100% fair elections are not possible in Bangladesh. However, if political parties participate in the elections with sincere commitment and goodwill, then an acceptable and fair election can be organized.
He was speaking at a roundtable discussion titled ‘Expectations and Challenges of Fair Elections’ organized by the Citizens’ Coalition at the CIRDAP Auditorium in the capital on Thursday (September 11).
Fair elections are not possible with laws and regulations alone. Without a good mindset, there will be no practical benefit, added Mahbub Zubair.
He said that it is no longer possible to influence the results as desired with black money and muscle power as before.
The Jamaat leader expressed his fear that if no solution is reached in the meeting of the Consensus Commission on future politics, elections and electoral procedures, it will bring a deep disaster for the nation.
Zubair believes that if a political party has the mentality of 'you have to win the election, you have to come to power', it is not good for democracy. 'There will be competition in the election, but this mentality of the future Bangladesh is for everyone must be there among everyone.'
