Students of Jamalpur Science & Technology University (JSTU) have extended financial assistance to 38 flood-affected families in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram as part of a humanitarian initiative.
The financial aid was distributed on Friday (July 31) under the initiative of the Chattogram Divisional Students' Welfare Council at JSTU. A total of 38 families from Kadam Rasul, Dongra and Khankhanabad villages each received Tk 1,500 from the fund raised by the students.
According to the organisers, the recent floods severely damaged homes, croplands and agricultural produce in the coastal villages along the Bay of Bengal. As many families struggled to rebuild their lives after the disaster, the university students came forward to support their rehabilitation efforts.
Sanowara Begum, a widowed resident who lost her mud house in the flood and is now living in temporary shelter, expressed her gratitude, saying, “May Allah bless you all. I have lost everything—my home and the support I once had. I am somehow surviving, and this assistance has given me hope to carry on.”
Another beneficiary, Shahin Akter, said the flood had washed away her family's livestock and poultry.
“We had cattle, ducks and chickens, but almost everything was lost in the flood. I cannot sleep at night worrying about how I will take care of my children in the coming days,” she said.
Yassir Arafat, president of the Chattogram Divisional Students' Welfare Council, said the organisation collected Tk 64,283 from students and well-wishers at the university and in Jamalpur.
“Initially, we planned to provide corrugated tin sheets to help rebuild damaged houses. However, due to damaged road communication, time constraints and a shortage of volunteers, we decided to distribute cash assistance instead. We sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this humanitarian effort. A detailed statement of income and expenditure will be published, and we hope to continue such initiatives in the future,” he said.
General Secretary Abdullah Al Minhaz, Treasurer Sazrul Islam & local people were present during the distribution programme.
