Traffic movement normal in Bhanga, protesters stand on the side of the road

Traffic movement is normal on the second day of the ongoing movement to protest the seat realignment in Bhanga, Faridpur. However, the protesters have taken positions on the side of the road.

There was no disruption to traffic movement since Monday (September 15) morning as police and Ansar members were on duty on the highway.

Eyewitnesses said that police and Ansar were deployed at various places including the Dhaka-Khulna highway since 6 am. As a result, buses, trucks, private cars and other vehicles are moving normally. However, the protesters are standing and shouting slogans while holding banners on the side of the highway.

Although the blockaders had taken positions in the Pukhuria, Madhabpur, Hamirdi areas of the Dhaka-Barisal highway in Bhanga Upazila Sadar and the Mansurabad bus stand areas of the Dhaka-Khulna highway since morning, they moved aside due to police action. As a result, traffic movement on the highway and railway remains normal.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhanga Highway Police Station Md. Rokibuzzaman said, we are trying to ensure that the people do not suffer. The protesters are currently staying on the side of the road and the highway has been kept empty. A large number of police and Ansar are working to keep the highway operational. The locals did not block the road until 9 am today, but they have taken a position on the side of the highway with banners containing their demands.

Meanwhile, one of the leaders of the protesters, Algi Union Parishad Chairman Md. Siddique Miah, was arrested early Sunday. Later, Bhanga Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Habibur Rahman filed a case under the Speedy Trial Act, naming 90 people and making 100 to 150 unknown accused, citing the road blockade as an "illegal demand".

Incidentally, the local people started a three-day morning-evening road and rail blockade program from Sunday to protest the Election Commission's gazette publication to cut Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga upazila from Faridpur-4 constituency and merge them into Faridpur-2 constituency. The second day of this program is going on today.
