Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh. The swearing-in ceremony was held at around 7:30pm on Friday at the historic Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban. Deputy Speaker Kaisar Kamal administered the oath.

Earlier in the evening, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s motorcade entered Bangabhaban. Security was tightened in and around the presidential palace from the afternoon ahead of the ceremony. Traffic restrictions and diversions were put in place on several roads, while members of law enforcement agencies were deployed at key points.

On Thursday, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP-nominated candidate, was elected president in the presidential election held at the Jatiya Sangsad. He secured 255 votes, while his only rival, opposition-backed candidate Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed, received 88 votes.

A total of 349 lawmakers were eligible to vote in the presidential election, of whom 343 cast their ballots. After the votes were counted, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Returning Officer A M M Nasir Uddin declared Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir the winner and the country’s 23rd President.
