Agriculture is one of the main driving forces of our economy, and the soul of this sector is the farsighted and hardworking farmers of this country. The touch of modern agricultural technology and the tendency to do something new beyond conventional methods are now spreading among farmers in rural areas of the country as well. Anwar Hossain, an ideal farmer of Mehar village in Comilla's Chandina upazila, has set a brilliant example of changing his fortune by yielding higher production at a lower cost. Breaking away from traditional farming trends, he is on the verge of achieving unique success by cultivating two different crops on the same land. His successful initiative and courage have now generated immense curiosity and enthusiasm among other local farmers.
Anwar Hossain, an energetic farmer from Mehar village in Chandina, has innovatively cultivated green chili as a companion crop alongside cauliflower on his 18-decimal land. In the language of agricultural science and modern farming methods, companion cropping is a highly profitable medium where maximum utilization of the same land is ensured. Cultivating a short-term or suitable auxiliary crop alongside the main crop on a specific plot ensures the balanced use of soil fertility and resources. Anwar Hossain has turned this scientific and profitable method into reality through his own intelligence and hard work.
Currently, the scenery of that field is truly mesmerizing. Clusters of green chili have already started appearing on the chili plants. Fresh and plump green chilies peeking through the green leaves of the plants have brought smiles to the farmer's face. Not only the chilies, but the cauliflower plants—the main crop of the field—are also extremely fresh and healthy. Although the cauliflower has not yet yielded fully or formed heads, agricultural experts say that seeing the excellent structure and growth pattern of the plants, cauliflowers will start appearing and become ready for the market within a few days. Such an aesthetic combination of two crops on the same land portrays a picturesque view of rural agriculture.
Behind this success of Anwar Hossain lies extremely cost-effective management and proper planning. He stated that the total cost for cultivating cauliflower and chili on his 18-decimal land was around 2,500 to 3,000 Taka. Compared to the current market prices of fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides, preparing such a large crop field at this minimal cost is truly commendable. By investing very low capital, the large-scale commercial prospects he has opened up convey a positive message to the rural economy. This model of gaining higher yields at a low cost proves that with proper farsightedness, farmers can achieve striking success even on small plots of land.
Farmer Anwar Hossain is extremely optimistic and enthusiastic about his financial returns. In the current market, the wholesale price of green chili ranges between 50 to 60 Taka per kg. As harvesting has begun, he has started selling them in the wholesale market. Furthermore, when the cauliflower becomes ready for the market in a short while, his income will increase manifold. Calculating the combined bumper yield of these two crops and current market rates, he is expecting great profits. Anwar Hossain joyfully shared that given the way the crops have yielded and the market demand for the produce, all his hardships and labor have been well worth it. He and his family are extremely happy with this profit.
This success of Anwar Hossain is not only making his own family economically self-reliant, but it has also become a major source of inspiration for unemployed youth and other farmers in surrounding areas. Many farmers of Mehar village are now inspired by his companion cropping method and are expressing interest in undertaking similar farming in the future. Anwar Hossain is a living proof that destiny can be changed by applying modernity and timely techniques in agriculture. His initiative proves that carrying out agricultural work with diligence, dedication, and proper planning is just a matter of time to bring economic prosperity to rural communities.
