The Bangladesh government has requested Delhi to close the political offices of the Awami League on Indian soil. The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry made the request in a statement on Wednesday (August 20).
A statement that has drawn the attention of the Bangladesh government said that the establishment of Awami League offices in the Indian capital Delhi and Kolkata is prohibited. This incident has occurred as part of the increasing anti-Bangladesh activities by the Awami League leadership on Indian soil. Many senior leaders of the Awami League, who are absconding in several criminal cases in Bangladesh due to serious crimes against humanity, are now on Indian soil.
On the evening of July 21, some senior leaders of the banned party (Awami League) under the guise of an NGO distributed booklets to members of the media present at the Delhi Press Club to interact with the public. Several reports in the Indian media have confirmed the increasing activities of this party on Indian soil.
The campaigning against the interests of Bangladesh by the fugitive leaders and activists of the banned political party, especially the illegal establishment of offices, by staying on Indian soil is a clear insult to the people and state of Bangladesh. This incident also poses a risk to maintaining good neighbourly relations with India, which are based on mutual trust and mutual respect, and has serious implications for the ongoing political transformation in Bangladesh.
The statement further said that it could create negative sentiments among the public in Bangladesh, which could affect the efforts of both countries to improve relations between the two neighbours.
The Bangladesh government requests the Indian government to take steps to ensure that no anti-Bangladesh activities are carried out by Bangladeshi nationals on Indian soil and to immediately close the political offices of the Awami League on Indian soil.
