FIFA Suspends Two Officials from US Team

FIFA, world football's governing body, has temporarily suspended two key officials from the United States team ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium. The suspended officials are team manager Sam Zapatka and US Soccer Federation Vice President of Security Frank Pannell. The suspensions came to light after appearing in FIFA's disciplinary preview list. FIFA has not officially disclosed a specific reason for the action. However, according to various media reports, the disciplinary measures relate to alleged violations of FIFA's match protocols and unauthorized entry into restricted areas following the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many analysts believe this may be connected to the situation surrounding US forward Folarin Balogun, who received a red card in that match. Balogun had returned to the pitch to celebrate with teammates after being sent off ,an act prohibited under FIFA rules. However, US Soccer has stated that these suspensions have no connection to Balogun's ban or to efforts to have him cleared to play against Belgium.US Soccer confirmed the suspensions but declined to comment further, saying the matter falls directly under FIFA's jurisdiction. FIFA has also not issued any public statement regarding the decision. Both officials typically hold significant responsibilities within the team. Sam Zapatka has been with the federation since 2015 and has served as team manager since 2020. Frank Pannell, meanwhile, was responsible for security matters and has a career background that includes working with agencies such as the Secret Service and the CIA.”
