Conflict between senior and junior students over alleged cannabis use, 2 injured
A senior student of the Department of Law and Justice at National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University has been seriously injured in an alleged attack by junior students in the university’s Bidrohi Hall. The injured student has been admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. In the same incident, an accused junior student was also injured and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.The incident took place around 10:00 PM on Sunday (June 21) in room 615 of Bidrohi Hall. The injured student, Hannan, is a 2018–19 batch student of the Law and Justice Department. The accused, Sifat-ul-Siam Mugdho, is a 2024–25 batch student of the Department of Philosophy.According to eyewitness sources, Hannan and Mugdho lived together as roommates in room 714 of Bidrohi Hall. Hannan informed the hall administration about allegations that Mugdho was using cannabis. Following the complaint, the provost of Bidrohi Hall, Professor Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, inspected the room. However, no evidence was found during the inspection. Later, Hannan returned to the room and allegedly found remnants of cannabis in an ashtray.This led to an argument between the two students. At one stage, Hannan allegedly slapped Mugdho. Later that night, while Hannan was having food in room 615 of the hall, he was allegedly attacked by Mugdho along with several junior students, according to eyewitnesses.Hannan sustained serious injuries in the attack. He was rescued and admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. The house tutor of Bidrohi Hall, Khairul Islam, was also reportedly injured while trying to bring the situation under control.Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media shows Mugdho also receiving treatment at a hospital. In the video, he claims that during the altercation, the senior student kicked him in the chest, causing his injury. He was later taken to the hospital by his associates.Following the incident, tensions spread between students of the Law and Justice Department and the Philosophy Department. It is reported that around midnight, a group of Law and Justice students went to Agnibina Hall in search of Philosophy students. After failing to find them, they allegedly entered several rooms and created disorder by scattering belongings.Students have called for intervention from the university administration to control the situation. However, it is alleged that the university proctor could not be reached despite multiple phone calls at the time.The hall administration has not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the incident. However, concerned authorities have said that the matter is under investigation.
