Cultural activist and graphic designer poet Shamim Ashraf has been detained in Mymensingh due to a controversy over religious sentiments.
He was detained from the city's Gulkibari area around 8:30 pm on Monday (October 6).
The arrested Shamim Ashraf is the son of Md. Alim Uddin of the Hargujir Par area of Ward No. 29 of the city. He is the owner of graffiti in the city's Ampatti More area.
Mymensingh District Detective Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Muhidul Islam confirmed the matter to the media.
He said that Shamim Ashraf had made a slur about heaven on social media (Facebook). As a result, religious sentiments were hurt, and a controversy arose against him. He was detained after learning about his whereabouts at night.
Mymensingh Superintendent of Police Kazi Akhtarul Alam said that a case against Shamim Ashraf is under process. He will be sent to court today, Tuesday.
Earlier, around 11 am today, Shamim Ashraf wrote on his Facebook account - I am deliberately bringing linguistic diversity to my status. And for a couple of days, abusive statuses will be seen. Just be patient for a couple of days, please. Then it will get better.
Two hours later, he replied to a commenter with another post - You have gone to the highest place in heaven and ***ed Sunny Leone.
This statement was seen as an extreme insult to Islam and the sacred faith of Muslims. After the post went viral, widespread anger spread across the city. Ordinary people and madrasa students protested on the streets. A storm of condemnation erupted across social media and devout Muslims demanded his immediate arrest.
