The main investigation officer Md. Alamgir will be questioned for the third day today by state-appointed lawyer Md. Amir Hossain on behalf of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in the case of crimes against humanity for the July-August genocide.
The interrogation will be held on Wednesday (October 8) by a judicial panel led by International Crimes Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder.
The state defense lawyer concluded his interrogation for the second day on Tuesday (October 7). Amir Hossain rejected the witness's statement about the July genocide and asked various defense questions on behalf of his clients. He refuted the argument that the police or law enforcement officers were forced to open fire because of the protesters. The tribunal adjourned the interrogation until today as it was not over after the interrogation was conducted throughout the day.
Prosecutor Mizanul Islam and Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim were on behalf of the prosecution. Prosecutor Abdus Sattar Palawan, Tarek Abdullah, Mamunur Rashid and others were present.
The interrogation began on October 6. On September 30, Investigation Officer Alamgir testified for the third day against Sheikh Hasina and three others. He is the 54th or last witness for the state in this case. In his statement, he presented various information. Among them, he mentioned the killings in 438 places in 41 districts during the movement in July last year and the use of deadly weapons in more than 50 districts.
The investigation officer gave his statement for the second day on September 29. On that day, along with various information, a report by Jamuna Television about the atrocities of the July movement that he had seized was shown to the tribunal. In addition, the horrific picture of the police massacre in Jatrabari on August 5 last year was presented. He even stated in his statement that 305,000 bullets were fired at students and the public in July-August. The statement of the investigation officer was broadcast live on Bangladesh Television. In addition, documentary footage broadcast on BBC, Al-Jazeera, and Amar Desh was shown.
Investigation Officer Alamgir's statement began on September 28. That day, 17 videos he seized were shown in the tribunal. These videos reveal the brutality of July-August. In all, 54 people testified in Sheikh Hasina's case in 25 working days. The arguments and verdict will move towards the verdict only after the interrogation of the last witness is completed.
The 22nd day of testimony and interrogation in the case ended on September 24. Special Investigation Officer and Prosecutor Tanvir Hasan Joha testified that day. Later, he was interrogated by Amir Hossain.
Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, one of the accused in the case, also testified as witness number 36. He has already become a public witness by admitting his guilt. In addition, the witness statements have revealed horrific descriptions of the massacres carried out across the country during the July-August movement last year. And blaming Sheikh Hasina, Kamal and those involved for all this, the martyrs' families and eyewitnesses have demanded exemplary punishment.
On July 10, the tribunal ordered the start of the trial by framing formal charges against Sheikh Hasina, Kamal and Mamun. The prosecution brought five charges of crimes against humanity against them in this case. The formal charges total 8,747 pages. Of this, 2,018 pages are references, 4,05 pages are seized lists and documentary evidence, and 2,724 pages are martyrs' lists. 81 people have been called as witnesses. On May 12, the officials of the tribunal's investigation agency submitted the report of the case to the Chief Prosecutor.
