The 15 army officers who were sent to prison

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has sent 15 army officers to jail in three separate cases. The cases allege disappearances and murders in the TFI-JIC cell during the long Awami League rule and crimes against humanity committed in July-August.

A three-member panel led by Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder passed the order after 8:30 am on Wednesday (October 22). The army officers in custody were produced before the tribunal in an air-conditioned prison van under tight security in the morning. Later, they were shown arrested and sent to jail.

The army officers sent to jail include former RAB Additional Director General Brigadier General Md. Jahangir Alam, Brigadier General Tofail Mostafa Sarwar, Brigadier General Md. Kamrul Hasan, Brigadier General Md. Mahbub Alam, Brigadier KM Azad, Colonel Abdullah Al Momen, Colonel Anwar Latif Khan (on retirement leave); former director of RAB's intelligence wing Lieutenant Colonel Md. Moshiur Rahman, Lieutenant Colonel Saiful Islam Sumon, Lieutenant Colonel Md. Sarwar Bin Kashem, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Redwanul Islam; former BGB officer Major Md. Rafat-bin-Alam; three former directors of DGFI—Major General Sheikh Md. Sarwar Hossain, Brigadier General Md. Mahbubur Rahman Siddiqui and Brigadier General Ahmed Tanvir Mazahar Siddiqui.

The tribunal has ordered the publication of notices in newspapers in three cases to summon the absconding accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The next hearing of the two disappearance cases will be held on November 20, and the hearing of the Rampura massacre case on July 18 and 19 last year has been scheduled for November 5.

Chief Prosecutor Advocate Md. Tajul Islam said that the prison authorities will decide in which prison the arrested army officers will be kept. He also expressed gratitude to everyone, including the army, for their assistance in the court process.

Earlier, on October 11, it was announced in a briefing at the army headquarters that 15 of the army officers named in the tribunal's charge sheet have been taken into custody.
