BNP will enact a law to stop enforced disappearances if it comes to power: Tarique Rahman

BNP will enact a law to stop enforced disappearances if it comes to power: Tarique Rahman

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said that if the BNP is elected by the people and forms the government, appropriate laws will be formulated in accordance with the International Convention for the Prevention of Enforced Disappearances (ICPPED).

He said this in a message on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of Enforced Disappearances on Friday (August 29).

In the message, Tarique Rahman said, "Enforced disappearances are a global problem, a gross violation of human rights. Such inhumane incidents occur especially in authoritarian regimes and regions with political conflicts. State security forces or law enforcement agencies often use such ruthless tactics against anti-government movements or political leaders of different views."

Expressing deep concern over the unprecedented disappearances in Bangladesh during Sheikh Hasina's tenure, he said, "Reliable human rights organizations have simultaneously revealed that more than seven hundred people have been disappeared by the law enforcement agencies of Bangladesh since January 2009. This is very touching and heartbreaking. To date, justice has not been served in a single case of disappearance. However, it is hopeful that the current interim government has approved in principle the draft of the ‘Disappearance Prevention, Remedy and Protection Ordinance 2025’ to ensure that no more disappearances occur in Bangladesh.

He said, the missing people were very dear members of their families. Their dreams, love and a beautiful future have been snatched from us. We do not know where the missing people are, but they have left behind a tragic and painful Bangladesh, where our acquired human rights and values have been robbed. Disappearance is recognized as an international crime.

The BNP acting chairman said, Article 7 (2) of the Rome Statute of the ICC defines disappearance as a crime against humanity, and emphasizes the need for justice for this violation of human rights. The families of the victims of disappearances do not know any information about their whereabouts and are also deprived of the right to justice.

On the International Day of the Disappeared by the State, Tarique Rahman, remembering people who have disappeared due to political philosophies, nations, languages, ethnic groups, cultures and races around the world, including Bangladesh, and expressing condolences to their families, said, "I call for unity and solidarity around the world for the trial and accountability of the individuals and institutions involved in this inhuman crime." Stating that a law will be enacted to prevent disappearances if the BNP comes to power, he said, "On behalf of our party, I promise that if the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP is elected by the people and forms the government, 'We will enact appropriate laws in accordance with the International Convention on the Prevention of Disappearances (ICPPED) adopted by the United Nations to ensure that no more people are disappeared in Bangladesh, God willing. Justice must be served for this violent and serious crime against humanity.'"
