Floods Forecast in 16 Districts Across the Country

The Bangladesh Water Development Board has said that water levels in several rivers across the country may cross danger levels within the next 24 to 72 hours. Due to heavy rainfall and rising river levels, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has forecast flooding in 12 districts of the country.


According to the forecast, short-term flood conditions may develop within 72 hours in the low-lying riverside areas of parts of Bandarban, Cox's Bazar, Feni, Chattogram, and Khagrachari districts. In addition, low-lying riverside areas in parts of Lakshmipur and Noakhali districts may be temporarily inundated in places.


Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has said that short-term flood conditions may arise within 24 to 72 hours in the low-lying riverside areas of parts of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Netrokona, Sherpur, and Mymensingh districts.


According to the forecast signed by Mostafa Kamal Jihan, Assistant Engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre under the Bangladesh Water Development Board, the Teesta River may flow above danger level within the next 48 hours, and short-term flood conditions may emerge in the low-lying riverside areas of Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts.


Meanwhile, over the past 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall was observed in the Chattogram division within the country, while heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was recorded in the Sylhet and Barishal divisions, as well as in the upstream Indian states of Meghalaya and Tripura. According to weather agencies, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is forecast over the next four days in the Chattogram, Sylhet, Mymensingh, and Rangpur divisions, along with the adjoining upstream Indian states of Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya, and West Bengal.
