When the monsoon season comes, nature seems to reveal its beauty. Sometimes there are clouds on the mountains, and sometimes there is a fair of greenery on the body of water. To see such a unique and beautiful form of the monsoon, you have to go to Chandina in Comilla. There, a magical water body, called Ghughara Beel, is beckoning visitors, spreading absolute fascination. Every year, when the monsoon season comes, this beel is adorned with a new and charming form, which easily captures the heart of any travel enthusiast.
From a geographical point of view, the location of Ghughara Beel is very beautiful and diverse. This huge beel is spread along the border of three upazilas of Comilla: Chandina, Daudkandi and Kachua in Chandpur. From afar or near, from whatever angle you look at this lake, it seems as if nature has decorated this entire area with utmost care in its own glory. When the cool breeze blows over the vast expanse of water stretching across the horizon, the dancing waves of the water in the lake create a sight to behold.
On the one hand, Ghughara Lake is working as an important economic zone of the region, on the other hand, it also has a wide range of attractions as a tourist center. The area of this open lake, which is jointly owned by the government and private sector, is close to a hundred acres. This vast water palace is becoming popular day by day as a unique tourist spot full of natural resources for tourists from home and abroad. Due to its geographical and economic importance, this lake is now known as one of the lifelines of this region.
Ghughara Lake is a huge reservoir of biodiversity. A wonderful coexistence of aquatic resources and various animals can be seen here. According to locals, about 50 to 60 types of delicious native fish are found in this lake. This huge storehouse of native fish plays a major role in meeting the meat demand of the region. Along with fish, the aquatic ecosystem of the lake contains snakes, frogs and other aquatic animals. Not only that, various types of seasonal birds can be seen roaming freely here throughout the year. The sight of birds flapping their wings with the sound of chirping brings the peaceful environment of the lake alive.
One of the main attractions of this lake is the naturally growing red and white water lilies. When miles upon miles of area are flooded with monsoon water, thousands of colorful water lilies stand on the water. These blooming water lilies have increased the beauty of the lake many times over. Especially when the dawn light falls on the calm water of the lake, the beautiful combination of the vast water stretching across the horizon and the red and white water lilies captivates the thirsty minds. There are various species of attractive algae, various types of aquatic plants, including Kachuripana, submerged under the water, which, when viewed from above the water, seem like another world is hidden under the water.
Ghughara Beel is not only a source of beauty, but it is also a major source of livelihood for the local people. There is a bumper harvest of rice here twice a year, during the dry and rainy seasons. The fertile alluvial soil of the beel produces golden rice. However, along with agriculture, fishing is one of the main occupations of the people of this region throughout the year. The traditional rural scene of fishing by casting nets or in boats maintains a constant activity on the beel.
The biggest attraction of this beel for travelers is boating in calm waters. The only traditional means of transportation here is the dinghy boat. When these small dinghy boats move forward on the calm water, tourists can get very close to nature. The free movement of boats in the Shaplar forest and the peaceful and serene environment around it instantly make you forget the fatigue of urban life.
If this wonderful creation of nature, Ghughara Beel, can be further maintained through proper planning, it can develop into one of the main eco-friendly tourist centers in the country. During these rainy days, countless people come from far and wide every day to take some time out of the busyness of mechanical life to see this beautiful water picture of nature, and they return with a heart full of admiration.
