National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has commented that Jamaat-e-Islami's so-called proportional representation (PR) movement was nothing but a planned political fraud.
He said that the movement was launched to divert the reform process of the National Dialogue and Consensus Commission from the real question of restructuring the state and the constitution in the wake of the people's mass uprising.
Nahid said this in a post on his Facebook account on Sunday (October 19) afternoon.
The NCP convener wrote in the post, the demand for the establishment of the upper house on the basis of proportional representation (PR) of votes was as a constitutional safeguard. We wanted to build a movement around such fundamental reforms and wanted to establish the legal framework of the July Charter through a broad national consensus. But Jamaat and its allies hijacked this agenda and turned it into a PR issue. This PR movement is being used as a bargaining chip to achieve petty party interests. Their aim was never reform, it was just a strategy.
Nahid further noted that Jamaat-e-Islami never discussed reforms before or after the July coup. They did not make any real proposals, constitutional vision, and any commitment to a democratic republic.
“Their sudden support for the Consensus Commission’s reforms was not a matter of conviction, but rather a strategic infiltration, a political sabotage disguised as reformism.”
He wrote that the people of Bangladesh have clearly understood their deception, they have woken up and will not be deceived by any false reformists or strategists again. Neither the Almighty (Allah) nor the sovereign people of this country will ever again allow dishonest, opportunistic and morally bankrupt forces to rule them.
