BNP senior lawyer and former MP Barrister Rumin Farhana has made important comments on the upcoming national elections, nomination process and party alliance formation. He spoke openly in a television discussion about the party's internal preparations, nomination distribution and the reaction of leaders and activists.
Rumin Farhana said that BNP is now in active discussions with various political parties on alliance formation and seat sharing. Especially, seat sharing is getting priority with those who have been by the party's side even in various adverse situations for the last 15 years. Negotiations for a compromise are also underway with some new parties. Some seats may be given concessions in the interest of the alliance.
He said that BNP is still waiting to announce its nominations in 63 seats. Most of these seats have been claimed by the alliance. We are now giving priority to candidates who have a realistic chance of winning.
Regarding himself, he said that his nomination is also on hold for the time being, and the final decision has not been made yet.
Some party workers are protesting on the streets and burning tires in protest after not getting nominations. In this context, Rumin Farhana said, “This is a very normal reaction. In such a large party, there are an average of three to four or sometimes up to ten candidates in each seat. It is not possible to nominate everyone.”
He believes that such anger or frustration is emotional, and it will not last long.
Rumin said that BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has met with the candidates several times and informed everyone about the nomination distribution process.
He said, “Out of 300 seats, only 300 people can be nominated. Those who did not get nomination this time may be given other responsibilities or opportunities in the future.”
Sympathizing with the emotions of the leaders and activists who did not get nomination, Rumin Farhana said, “Someone can come forward as a candidate only as a result of the sacrifice, labor and love of the leaders and activists. Therefore, it is natural for them to be upset, and this emotion should also be respected.”
Asked whether it would be possible to stop the trend of independent candidates, Rumin said, “It is difficult to say anything right now. Because the nominations for 63 seats have not been finalized yet. The party’s Secretary General has also said that the initial list may change – someone new may be added, someone may be dropped.”
He said that the party is also waiting for the Election Commission’s verdict on some seats.
Discussing the number of female candidates, Rumin Farhana said, “If the BNP follows the policy of fielding 5 percent female candidates, then about 9-10 women have been nominated so far. That means there is a chance for female candidates in 4-5 more seats, that should be kept in mind.”
Barrister Rumin Farhana’s statement reflected the complexity of BNP’s internal democratic process and preparations for the upcoming elections. He respected the emotions of the leaders and activists and said that in the end, everyone will have to work together to reach the party’s goals.
